Growing communities
Amo recalls the food his father used to cook, and a growing South Asian community leading to a celebration of Punjabi culture.

I remember eating Spam curry. That was something my dad used to cook. And sometimes Pilchard curry or egg curry. It was food they could cook quickly and still get their protein before work. And I still love it today. I cook it for my children, and they love it all the more for the story. It connects them to their heritage. Something happened to my generation as we left school. It was the perfect time because Bhangra music was being born right in front of us- the UK Bhangra scene in the mid 80’s. For us, Derby the centre of the music industry because the Aaj Khaal scene was at it’s height, all of the bands came to Derby. Everybody suddenly began to identify with their culture and I realised we started talking to each other in Punjabi a little bit. In Derby you suddenly had the opening of Shensha sweet centre and you could buy parothis in a shop. I can remember going home to my mother and saying I just had parotha in the shop and I got a clip round the earhole! She said “I could have made it at home for you, why are you spending money there?” and it wasn’t just me, all of the lads were doing that. [interviewer] “You didn’t dare tell her that parothas were better from the shop?] [both laugh] Actually they weren’t, hers were better but it was just the convenience that we could go somewhere and be identified in a Punjabi way eating Punjabi food outside the house.

A life's work
Amarjit talks about his 46 year long career at Rolls Royce.

I became a union member very early- I think I was the youngest union member. I then moved up in the workplace - there were not many brown people doing that role. I got it due to the apprenticeship but also I wasn’t afraid to talk. A lot of my friends were English and so I blended in. I worked in experimental, there were about a dozen agents there. We worked with raw material and identified what was needed for the engine, then would make it. Working from plans, forging material, grinding it, sanding it and making it into a finished product. I’ve been at Rolls for 46 years. Gone through the workplace from when we used to use typewriters, handing our notes to the secretary, through to floppy disks and to computers now. I’ve seen the changes in technology. I've grown with the workplace. A lot more South Asian people at Rolls Royce now, in higher positions. In late hours, its always the south Asians who stay late and carry on working late. I say to them, this is why we’ve done in 50 years what it can take others a hundred years to do.

Returning to India
Mohinder talks about a journey back to India with his friend Bryan.

The Golden Temple is the best place in India. Many people go there every day. It is very peaceful in your mind when you go in. Lots of people across states used to catch a bus to this temple. Including my walking leader. An Englishman named Brian. One day he asked, “Can you go to India with me?” I said I had no money. He came with a cheque for £1,000. He asked 'now will you go with me?' I said 'why not?' Brian and his son wanted to make a family tree. His father was in the British Army. And so we go. My friends and my older brother meet. We are all very happy to meet. They go to the golden temple. Brian says to me, next year we will come back. We like India. I say to Brian, 'people in this country, they wouldn't give me £5 or even £1. But you give me £1000. when can I pay you back?' He said, 'when you have it.' After maybe a year, I write him a cheque for £1000. He said 'you don't need to give me this.'

Susan
Working in Derby
Susan talks about her father's hard work as he established himself in Derby.
Susan
He was such a good worker that the foreman asked if he had any friends or relatives who could also work for him. He said yes but they are in India and I am only in a rented room. The foreman then said to him, 'look if I give you the deposit to a house, will you get a house? And you can pay me back.' And that’s how Dad bought a another house, a three storied Victorian terrace with large rooms and then he wrote back to Indian friends in the village to sponsor them. They came over and walked straight into a job. When they could afford to, they would then buy their own house. So Dad helped people along that way. (Interviewer) That's a lot of investment to give one man. He must have been a good worker.) Well he would work double shifts, he would work the night shift, come home, eat his breakfast, then go back and do the day shift and he would work seven days a week.
