Family albums of treasured photographs usually include images that record milestones in family members lives, including births, school photographs, graduations and weddings. A selection of these would also be chosen to send back to family overseas, ensuring family ties remained strong and different generations stayed in touch.

"Any photographs that were taken here weren’t kept here, they were sent back there to say ‘this is how we’re getting on.’ I was born in this country, they’d never seen me, I was the first grandchild born in this country. So all of my photographs as a youngster went back there."

“I was one of the first to get married at the Hindu temple. He was trying to set a precedent where you used it, so you got your children married in the temple. And so he wanted to show ‘look I’m doing it, everybody else should be doing it."

These photographs might be looked through at family gatherings, evoking shared memories and amusement at past fashions for clothes and home furnishings. Photographs that were sent to relatives across the seas were kept there, keeping family ties strong.
