Phil's family albums are full of photographs taken by his father-from taking self portraits in the workplace, photographing family in the back garden and capturing busy social events, it seems that Mr Basi was often found behind a camera lens. Mr Basi purchased his from W.W.Winters studio on Midlands Road in Derby, the longest running photography studio still in operation.

For Mr Basi's son Philip, Winters was more than a studio—it was a window into a world of possibilities. As a child, he was mesmerized by the images displayed in its windows, igniting a passion that led him into the world of television production. Philip has worked for over four decades with ITV, BBC, and networks worldwide. His latest film, Winters Wonderland, is a deeply personal and historical journey exploring the enduring influence of WW Winters, Derby’s iconic photography studio, and its role in shaping the legacy of the South Asian community in the city. With the dedication of the Winters team—including Philip’s sister and her friend—this treasure trove of photographs, documents, and artifacts is being rediscovered. Winters Wonderland brings these untold stories to light, celebrating heritage, community, and the power of storytelling.

A Visionary's Mission

Dev took on the role of organising the Holi festival in the early 1970s, aiming to create an inclusive event that highlighted the cultural richness of the South Asian community while welcoming everyone in Derby to participate. His vision was to make the festival not just a cultural celebration, but a bridge that connected various communities within the city.
